What about extremists/jihadists/Al-Qaeda in Syria?

One armed group operating in Syria, Jabhat al-Nusra, recently announced its affiliation with Al-Qaeda.  Leaders of the Syrian Coalition and the FSA denounced their statement and consider it an attempt to impose an extremist vision of Syria on a population that widely rejects such ideologies.  The most strategically effective action the international community can take to help marginalize these extremists is to support the mainstream opposition. By helping it become an organized political force, an efficiently trained and equipped defense force, and an effective interim government that welcomes the partnership of democratic secular institutions the SC will easily overshadow and outperform the local efforts of extremists.
