Statement of Syrian Opposition Coalition President al-Jarba Following Meeting with President Obama and Ambassador Rice

President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) Ahmad al-Jarba met with President Obama and Ambassador Rice today where he conveyed the thanks and appreciation of the Syrian people to the American people for all their supportive efforts and aid delivered. President al-Jarba was accompanied by General Abdillilah Bashir, Chief of Staff to the Supreme Military Council and senior members of the SOC.

President Obama and Ambassador Rice reaffirmed the United States’ support to the moderate opposition and the Syrian people in their struggle for a genuine transition to democracy.

President al-Jarba told President Obama and Ambassador Rice that he looks forward to a special relationship between the United States and the New Syria to ensure stability, peace, and international security. The opposition delegation reiterated its commitment to opposing extremism in all forms and described efforts by the Free Syrian Army to counter Al Qaeda affiliates and Iranian trained foreign fighters.

The opposition delegation discussed the need to empower the Syrian people to defend themselves against the war crimes committed by the regime daily and the need for more pressure against Assad to accept a political solution.

The meeting with the President was encouraging and productive. We believe the visit to Washington was a milestone for a new era in relations between the United States and the Syrian people towards establishing continuous coordination and cooperation in ending the Syrian people’s suffering, establishing democracy, and countering extremism.
