Wouldn’t U.S. involvement just turn Syria into another Iraq or Afghanistan?

A:

No; the Syrian opposition is not calling for a “boots on the ground” style intervention from the U.S. or any other nation. They call for the creation of safe zones through already-deployed defensive missile systems in Turkey, or defense against Assad air force bombers that would be provided by allies including the U.S., the Arab League, Turkey, and the 106 “Friends of the Syrian People” nations to halt the mass killing of civilians and other atrocities and provide the needed support to the opposition to establish governance structures, deliver much-needed humanitarian aid, and tip the balance of power and either bring the regime to an end or force a negotiated settlement. One way to achieve this is through defense use of existing batteries of Patriot missiles in Turkey to establish a buffer zone over northern Syria.
