Today, the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) and Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) will call attention to the systematic targeting of medical facilities and health workers at a Die-In held on Dag Hammarskjold Plaza outside the United Nations Headquarters.
The Syrian National Coalition, along with hundreds of medical professionals, partners, and allies, will be standing in solidarity with the 670 Syrian medical workers who have been killed in Syria since the start of the Syrian crisis, 95 percent of whom have been killed by Syrian regime forces.
Nearly one month after the Russian airstrikes on Syria began, it is clear that the Syrian regime and its allies are escalating their systematic targeting of hospitals and medical facilities. In the past four weeks alone, both the Syrian American Medical Society and Physicians for Human Rights have reported attacks by Russian forces on at least three medical facilities, including the only two hospitals in southern Aleppo city and a polyclinic in Sarmin, Idlib. Data from the Syrian Civil Defense indicates that Russian airstrikes are now the primary cause of civilian death in Syria.
As upwards of 120,000 Syrians flee due to the increase in violence compounded by the targeting of medical facilities, the Syrian National Coalition reiterates its condemnation of Russian aggression in Syria and calls on the international community to take immediate action to protect Syrian civilians, including through the enforcement of a no bombing zone. Today, we ask that you join our calls for civilian protection and demand an end to the systematic targeting of Syrian doctors by joining SAMS and PHR at the UN.
