The Syrian Coalition strongly supports today’s demand by the independent Commission of Inquiry for full accountability for war crimes in Syria and shares its assessment that the crisis in Syria has “morphed into multiple shifting conflicts involving countless actors and frontlines.” To stop the violence and brutality from escalating further the international community must adopt a comprehensive approach to the situation in Syria that addresses both the causes of the current crisis – Assad’s destructive tyranny; and its consequence – ISIS’s threat to global security.
The Commission today confirmed the Syrian regime’s responsibility for widespread and systematic attacks on innocent civilians, including repeated and illegal use of the chemical weapon chlorine gas. These heinous acts require accountability through a referral of the situation in Syria to the International Criminal Court (ICC). Impunity and international inaction on Syria have given the Assad regime, war criminals, a free pass and enabled the dangerous rise of extremist terrorist groups like the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
The Syrian Coalition continues to call for a concerted effort to strengthen moderate forces on the ground, represented by the Free Syrian Army, backed up with limited air strikes. The Free Syrian Army has made gains against both ISIS and the Syrian regime. It requires international support to win this multi-front battle and establish the only alternative to extremism.
