Barring Muslims from US Undermines Fight Against ISIS

In response to Monday’s incendiary remarks by US Presidential candidate Donald J. Trump calling on the United States to bar all Muslims from entering the United States, the US Representative of the Syrian National Coalition, Dr. Najib Ghadbian, said:

“Mr Trump’s divisive comments undermine the fight against ISIS and make Americans less safe. The United States has a long and proud tradition of providing refuge to those in need. Trump’s hate-mongering only undermines that venerable tradition and plays right into the hands of ISIS and other extremist groups.

“It will take more than religious scapegoating and rhetorical bluster to undermine ISIS.  If Trump is serious about combatting ISIS, he should put forward a comprehensive plan to eradicate this evil terrorist group at its source: in Syria, where the Assad regime’s indiscriminate brutality has created a safe-haven for terrorists like Al Qaeda and ISIS, and has driven a steady stream of recruits into ISIS ranks. Syrians need protection from ISIS and Assad—this is the only way to effectively stop the terrorist threat, and to lay the basis for the political settlement needed to eradicate ISIS definitively.

“The Syrian people and the Syrian National Coalition condemn the brutal terrorist attacks in San Bernardino, California, in the strongest terms. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and we stand with the United States in this time of national mourning. The sad truth, however, is that Muslims make up the vast majority of ISIS targets. ISIS's only ambition is to kill, terrorize and oppress. But the best defence we have against ISIS is not to sow fear or further divide and stigmatize our communities, but instead to take a rational approach to defeating this terrorist scourge and the tyrannical, brutal regime that feeds it.”
