In responding to today's Syria consultations at the United Nations Security Council, Dr. Najib Ghadbian, Syrian Coalition Special Representative to the UN, stated:
“Today’s Security Council consultations on the humanitarian situation in Syria were a stark reminder that the humanitarian situation in Syria is grave and worsening and will continue to worsen so long as Assad remains in power. During the Holy month of Ramadan, the Syrian regime mercilessly ramped up its deadly aerial assaults on civilian targets, deploying deadly barrel bombs on civilian neighbourhoods across the country. It continued to obstruct, delay and refuse the provision of humanitarian aid to millions of innocent Syrians.
“While the UN’s latest efforts to support humanitarian access without regime consent offer an important opportunity to bring aid to millions of Syrians—far more is needed. Millions of Syrians continue to suffer needlessly from hunger, starvation and disease and will continue to do so irrespective of the full implementation of UN Security Council resolution 2165. The Syrian Coalition and our forces on the ground, the Free Syrian Army, have stated repeatedly that we are willing and able to secure safe humanitarian passage for relief workers throughout all of the areas under our control. We urge humanitarian agencies to deliver aid across all liberated areas of Syria, irrespective of Syrian regime consent, and as required by UN Security Council resolution 2139.”
